Welcome to the Comics Corner! The Fourth of July is upon us and it appears that even the comics are celebrating with increased levels of awesome both regular and unexpected. Corner favorites Skullkickers and FF are in action this week along side some surprises such as Amazing Spider-Man and Venom. Since we’re feeling brave we also take a trip to the Ultimate Universe the world of Flashpoint with Ultimate X and Project Superman. Missing all those old eighties cartoons and toy lines? Then why aren’t you reading Super Dinosaur!? It’s a summer celebration of awesome comics so come on in and find out who’s blown away the competition at the Top of the Stack!

Legendary Creator Gene Colan Dead at 84

Diamond is saddened to report the passing of artist Gene Colan, as reported by writer/editor Clifford Meth, a close friend of Colan's, via a June 24 blog post. Meth writes, “I regret to announce that my friend Gene Colan died at about 11 PM on June 23. Gene spent this last week in a quasi-coma state following a broken hip and complications from liver disease. He was 84.”

Known for this moody, evocative work on Daredevil, Tomb of Dracula, Howard the Duck, Tales of Suspense, two Nathaniel Dusk, Private Investigator mini-series, Detective Comics, Batman, and aDetectives, Inc. graphic novel, among many other projects, his career started with Wings Comics in 1944. The artist also co-created Marvel's Blade and Falcon.

In 2005, Colan became a member of the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame, and his last published comic book work, the illustration of 2009's Captain America #601, won he and writer Ed Brubaker the Eisner Award for Best Single Issue.

Marvel Announces AVENGERS 1959!
