COVINGTON, Ky. (AP) \u2014 The Kentucky High School Athletic Association Board of Control says esports participants will need written approval to compete in the League of Legends video game.<\/p>\n

Kentucky held\u00a0its first<\/a>\u00a0sanctioned high school esports title meet in February, but officials are still working out which games they feel comfortable with.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve gotta communicate and tell each other what to do on the multitasking, and then when it all comes down to it, we need to gather together and know what our strengths and weaknesses are when we\u2019re all together,\u201d said Trey Gordon, a sophomore who helped Boyle County win the inaugural KHSAA\/PlayVS esports \u201cLeague of Legends\u201d state championship. The Lexington Herald-Leader\u00a0reports<\/a>\u00a0a Thursday meeting stopped short of banning League of Legends, which is a multiplayer online battle arena game developed and published by Riot Games.<\/p>\n

Commissioner Julian Tackett says school officials like the game but statewide there is a divided opinion on whether it\u2019s too violent.<\/p>\n

The board decided to require written approval from principals, superintendents and parents before students can play.<\/p>\n
